Baby, it’s cold outside! And even if it isn’t, the winter months have less light, so we tend to stay inside more. There are obvious outdoor winter worries for our skin, like the wind and cold, but also some indoor hazards, like forced air heating that zaps moisture, and a lack of fresh air and sunshine. Staying in also gives us the opportunity to practice self-love in the form of self-skincare. So, hunker down and give yourself a TLC “Better Me” day. Here are a few ideas of what to focus on.
What To Do About Dry, Dehydrated Skin
Is the dry skin on your legs looking (and feeling) crepey? Or is the dull, lackluster skin on your face feeling tight and uncomfortable? Here’s what to do to make sure skin feels and looks as hydrated as in more humid seasons.
After the bath, slather on Active Hydration Body Replenish to banish dry, flaky skin and give your whole body immediate and long-lasting hydration. On your face, refine your pores with REDEFINE Pore Minimizing Toner and then use the REDEFINE AMP MD Derma-Roller to visibly firm skin and prep it for the next step: Active Hydration Serum. Drenching your skin in a bath of Hyaluronic Acid and Glycerin in our proprietary 3D3P Molecular Matrix will leave it hydrated and luminous by attracting moisture from the immediate environment — your steamy bathroom. Then follow up with REDEFINE Intensive Renewing Serum, part of the AMP MD System, for visibly firmer skin. For more hydration, REDEFINE Overnight Restorative Cream is going to help give you a great night’s sleep because you’ll know you have total moisture helping your skin combat the elements — be they inside or out. For extra self-love, REDEFINE Multi-Function Eye Cream will visibly firm and smooth the eye area while REDEFINE Lip Renewing Serum pampers and moisturizes lips to reduce the look of wrinkles and give you a luscious pout.
What To Do About Clogged Pores, Oily Skin and Dry Skin with Breakouts
The winter can cause those with a tendency towards breakouts to suffer too! Here’s why. The cold weather, along with indoor heat, will cause your skin to become drier. Fighting acne with cleansers or treatments that you used in summer, perhaps high in Benzoyl Peroxide or Salicylic Acid, will dry out your pimples, yes, but also cause your skin to produce more oil to compensate for the over-drying. The oil can clog pores and make your breakouts worse, especially if you have flaky skin on the surface mixing with the oil. So, even if your skin is oily and breaking out, it’s important to use a good moisturizer in winter.
For this act of self-skincare, first start with Micro-Dermabrasion Paste that will get rid of all the dry, flaky skin on the surface. Take a warm, hydrating shower to warm up and soften the oil clogging your pores, then apply the Pore Prep Solution and get the gunk out of pores with the Pore Cleansing MD System, our newest pro skincare tool for clogged pores and blackheads. Lightly moisturize your body with ESSENTIALS Daily Body Moisturizer. For your face, start your UNBLEMISH Regimen with the Gentle Exfoliating Acne Wash followed by the Clarifying Toner. Drench your face in hydration with Active Hydration Serum, which will not clog pores or cause acne. Remember, your skin still needs moisture so it doesn’t overcompensate with oil. Active Hydration Bright Eye Complex will help refresh the eye area. UNBLEMISH Dual Intensive Acne Treatment will help clear existing and prevent new blemishes from forming. Then, to seal in moisture, RECHARGE Ultra Boost Moisturizing Treatment will help nourish and defend skin from the environment (including the dry air in your home) and not clog pores or cause acne.
Finish off your self-skincare routine with Multi-Function Eye Cream and REDEFINE Lip Renewing Serum. Whether you have dry, flaky skin, or you experience breakouts, your at-home, full-on self-love spa ritual is complete!
We recently asked dermatologists what they always—without fail—do to or put on their faces: After all, if a medical expert religiously adheres to a certain a specific cream or step in their beauty routine, you should, too. The inverse is also true—if dermatologists don't use or believe in it, neither should we. Ahead, products, ingredients, gadgets, and treatments to avoid, per those with some of the best complexions (and degrees) in the business.
Don't apply Chemical acids liberally.
Piling on chemical exfoliants can wreak havoc on your complexion. "I don't overuse acids or use too many at the same time," says New York City dermatologist Dr. Debra Jaliman, who also adds that they can redden and inflame the skin—and ultimately break down the skin's outer protective barrier.
Don't pile on silicone primers.
The majority of foundation primers on the market are packed with silicone, an ingredient that creates a barrier between your skin and any product you apply after. In theory, that sounds great, but in practice, it's a recipe for clogged pores. Dr. Jaliman avoids them at all costs, and also says she stays away from any products (primers or otherwise) that contain it.
Don't use wax as a form of hair removal.
"When it comes to hair removal, I would choose laser, tweezing, or threading instead of waxing," says Dr. Jennifer MacGregor of Union Square Laser Dermatology. "The hot wax adheres to your skin and pulls off a layer along with the hair. If you use retinoids or exfoliants regularly it could even cause you to blister, burn, scab, or scar."
Don't wash with loofahs.
Skipping the loofah is—hopefully—common knowledge by now. If you're still using one? Toss it. "Scrubbing with a loofah is rough and uneven (compared to a nice gentle glycolic wash that gently exfoliates and makes the skin glow). Also, the moisture inside a sponge harbors bacteria and other microbes that you will then rub on your skin the next time you use it," Dr. MacGregor says.
Don't make homemade scrubs or masks with fruits and vegetables.
"There are so many reasons not to do this!" cautions Dr. MacGregor, citing that you could unknowingly be applying allergens and irritants right onto your face. The worst-case scenario however, has nothing to do with an allergic reaction: "They can make you photosensitive and cause burns with sunlight exposure," Dr. MacGregor says.
Getting a "base tan" won't protect you from further sun damage, says Dr. Dendy Engelman, adding that this unfortunate practice is pure myth. "There is no such thing as a safe UV tan. Tans are caused by harmful UV radiation from the sun or tanning lamps, and if you have one, you've sustained skin cell damage. Any change in the color of your skin equals sun damage," she says.
Don't wash with hot water.
"Hot water can strip the natural oils from your skin, leaving it dry and vulnerable to cracking, especially in the winter. Losing these oils compromise the skin's barrier and make skin irritated. It is best to shower in warm to lukewarm water instead, which will reduce the amount of oils that are stripped," Dr. Engelman says.
Don't pick at a scab.
Dr. Doris Day cautions against picking any type of scab, from a healed-over pimple to a previously-skinned knee: "I never pick off a scab after trauma. Nor do I pick at my skin if I have the occasional breakout. As it ages, skin does not heal as well as when it's young, so the redness and discoloration can last a lot longer."
Don't overdo it on sugar and alcohol.
An inflammatory diet won't do your complexion any favors, notes Dr. Day, who says that moderating your sugar and alcohol intake makes for a more youthful complexion over time. Too much of either can lead to premature aging and dull skin, she warns.

I am thrilled to introduce you to Dr. Jenna Lester. A Harvard undergrad, former Brown medical student and current faculty member at UCSF, Dr. Lester is keen on finding modern skincare solutions for people of color. Read ahead to learn more about how she found her calling in dermatology and what her new “Skin of Color” program is all about.
Rodan + Fields: What makes premium skincare with high-quality ingredients so effective versus using basic soap and water?
Dr. Lester: I think skincare that’s developed with technology that takes into account the dynamic nature of skin is really important. Sometimes the ingredients needed to correct (impurities) aren’t contained in the same specific way in generic soap and water, whose purpose is to strip the skin of any sort of dirt or oil. I think it’s important to use specific products that are made for the face for that reason.
R+F: Why is good skincare plus a daily regimen important?
Dr. Lester: Sometimes we forget that the skin is the largest organ of the body, and because it’s dynamic, things are always changing. Some things happen that you may not want to happen, and you want to correct them. Just like with any other organ; if something undesired was happening, you’d take a pill every day to address it. Even though the skin is an organ we look at our every day, it really needs to be treated with the same level of care as any internal organ.
R+F: Why is starting a skincare routine at a young age important?
Dr. Lester: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. It’s good to prevent something rather than trying to fix it. I also think if you can get into good habits from an early age, they will feel more natural over time. You wouldn’t skip brushing your teeth for years and get cavities and then go to the dentist and get them all drilled and filled. You brush your teeth every day to prevent cavities.
R+F: What inspired you to pursue dermatology?
Dr. Lester: My dad was the first person to suggest it as a career. I was initially considering other specialties in medicine. I was home for a holiday, and my dad was like, “You should think about dermatology.” He loves his dermatologist. He’s always gone since I can remember and has a great relationship with his dermatologist. He never misses an appointment! He recognized what an impact a dermatologist can have on someone, and he was like, “That would be a great career for you.”
R+F: Tell us about your practice at UCSF.
Dr. Lester: I started the “Skin of Color” program within the department of dermatology at UCSF. This program has three branches: clinical care, seeing patients; education, educating dermatology residents who are in training, and other dermatologists; and research as well. I’m currently building each aspect of the program but focusing most of my energy on patient care. The program’s goal is to address disparities in dermatology by providing a place where patients of color feel comfortable having their skin disease treated. Sometimes, patients with darker skin have different concerns or have different diseases that affect them more commonly. It’s important to have a specific set of knowledge and skills in order to diagnose and treat dermatologic conditions that appear in darker skin.
