How to Clean Up Your Skin's Act this Halloween

Many Halloween transformations involve layers of makeup. And though it’s tempting to fall into bed (foundation and all) after a night of fun, consider this your official reminder to wash your face thoroughly before you hit the sheets.

Your cleanser is one of the most important steps in your skincare routine because it also prepares your skin for the next steps in your Regimen. Using the wrong cleanser can affect the skin’s delicate moisture barrier, possibly causing future irritation or preventing other products from absorbing effectively. Choose a cleanser that not only removes makeup and grime, but also treats and nourishes your specific skin concerns with powerful ingredients. Here are some DOs and DON’Ts for putting your freshest face forward this Halloween and year-round.

DO remove makeup before you wash your face. Many cleansers aren’t able to fully remove concealer or foundation, especially around the eyes or nose. Rodan + Fields REDEFINE Eye Cloths gently and thoroughly remove makeup while also depositing anti-aging peptides to reduce the appearance of lines, wrinkles and puffiness.
DON’T overcleanse your skin. More is not necessarily better when it comes to washing your face. Too much sudsing and scrubbing can disrupt the skin’s fragile moisture barrier, which then leads to dryness, irritation and potential flare-ups. For best results, cleanse with the right formula once or twice a day.
DO find a cleanser that addresses your most important skincare issue. Acne-prone skin calls for a cleanser that contains a proven FDA-recognized ingredient like salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide or sulfur. UNBLEMISH Acne Treatment Sulfur Wash, for instance, contains 3 percent sulfur to fight blemishes. Dull or discolored skin fares better with an exfoliating cleanser that helps brighten its appearance, such as REVERSE Deep Exfoliating Wash. If you’re worried about lines, pores and loss of firmness, REDEFINE Daily Cleansing Wash draws impurities from skin while helping exfoliate without drying skin for a younger-looking appearance. And if sensitive skin concerns are your issue, SOOTHE Gentle Cream Wash contains barrier-nuturing ceramides to support your skin’s natural resiliency.
DON’T use a washcloth to cleanse. The rough texture of a washcloth can be too aggressive for the skin. Instead, apply cleanser in gentle circular motions with your fingertips.
DO rinse thoroughly with warm—not hot—water. Hot water can strip the skin of its natural moisturizing factors. And it’s a myth that you can “close pores” by splashing the face with cold water. Pores are not able to open and close.
DON’T think that suds are necessary for clean skin. Many people believe that you need tons of suds for squeaky-clean skin. However, sudsing surfactants can be too harsh for those with dry or sensitive skin and actually strip away the lipid barrier, making skin more susceptible to inflammation. Those with sensitive skin should go for a gentle, creamy formula free of fragrance, like SOOTHE Gentle Cream Wash.

Sleeping in Make-Up?

The risks of sleeping in your make-up are more than skin-deep -

DermRF_DiscoveryZone_070915_DermRF_v2
Ever find yourself tempted to skip your nightly skincare routine and fast-forward to dreamland? You’re not alone. A UK survey, as reported in the Daily Mail, found that a third of women go to sleep at least twice a week without cleansing their face, and 75 percent of readers in New Beauty admitted they’ve done this too. But sleeping in your makeup can lead to some not-so-pretty consequences for your skin, inside and out.
When a Daily Mail reporter decided to see what would happen if she abstained from cleansing her face at night over a 30-day period, her skin became extremely dry and sensitive, her eyelashes fell out in clumps and her pores grew by 5 percent. She also developed “eyelash dandruff.” The reporter noted that wrinkles on the sides of her face had grown worse, possibly due to her drying talc-based makeup.
Skipping your pre-bedtime face wash may not only cause you to look older, it could lead to problems that run more than skin deep. According to a study published in the Journal of Applied Toxicology in June 2015, heavy metals such as lead, mercury and cadmium found in cosmetic products may act directly on the skin or be absorbed through the skin into the blood, where they can accumulate in the body and exert toxic effects in various organs.
Why risk it? Help your skin stay healthy and get the most out of your ‘beauty rest’ by washing your face before you snooze. For best results, use a cleanser designed to address your unique skin concerns—wrinkles, acne, redness or discoloration. In a pinch, remove makeup with REDEFINE Eye Cloths, which deposit anti-aging peptides to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and puffiness.

Take the Dare: Go Make-up Free!

What do adult women obsess over more than finances, health, family, relationships or professional success? Their appearance. The Real Body Image Survey by the Today Show and AOL found in an online poll of 2,000 women and 200 teenagers, that women spend an average of 55 minutes every day working on their appearance. Their worries range from their stomach (69 percent) to skin (40 percent) to thighs (39 percent) and hair (32 percent). According to the survey, 77 percent of adult women and 80 percent of teen girls have something bad to say about their looks.
With so much importance placed on personal image, it’s no wonder women cover their complexion with layers of foundation and concealer in the quest for flawless skin. But, instead of trying to hide skin concerns under makeup, why not address the cause with effective ingredients and clinically proven technologies and tools? You can empower your skin and develop the confidence to go makeup-free with Rodan + Fields skincare Regimens, which are designed to address a variety of skin types and concerns—whether it’s wrinkles, lines, dullness, sensitivity or acne.

Start using your Regimen now and you should see better-looking skin by next month, as we host our second annual #RFGoNaked Day. On November 6, Rodan + Fields is calling upon everyone to break free from the foundation and post a makeup-free selfie to your social networks with the hashtag #RFGoNaked. For every selfie posted, R+F will donate $4—the cost of one student program day—to buildOn, a non-profit that works to break the cycle of poverty, illiteracy and low expectations for urban students through impactful community action and local service programs..
Once you discover the right Regimen for your skin, you’ll be better equipped to “Go Naked” from the neck up November 6 and feel good about embracing your natural glow—while doing some good in the process.
